Location

Wellington, New Zealand’s vibrant capital, is renowned for its stunning harbour, creative energy, and dynamic cultural scene. Nestled between rolling green hills and a sparkling waterfront, the city offers a perfect blend of history, arts, and nature. As the political and cultural heart of the country, Wellington is home to iconic landmarks such as Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s national museum, the Beehive, and the charming Cuba Street precinct, known for its lively cafés, boutiques, and street performances. With a compact and walkable city centre, Wellington boasts a world-class culinary scene, award-winning craft beer breweries, and a thriving film industry, famously home to Wētā Workshop and the creators of The Lord of the Rings.

Please Note: Wellington International Airport is located just 8km from the city centre, with a typical drive taking around 15–20 minutes. A taxi costs approximately $30–$50, while rideshare options and the Airport Express bus offer more affordable transport into the city. We recommend pre-booking a shuttle via Super Shuttle or coordinating a shared ride with other conference attendees. Once in the city, most attractions, hotels, and venues are within walking distance, and public transport via Metlink buses, trains, and the iconic Wellington Cable Car makes getting around easy.

Weather

Wellington in December enjoys pleasant summer temperatures, with daytime highs averaging around 14–21°C and extended daylight hours for exploring. While the city is known for its breezy conditions, December typically offers plenty of sunshine alongside a refreshing sea breeze.

Attractions

Wellington’s unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty makes it a must-visit destination. Whether you're drawn to its thriving arts scene, picturesque landscapes, or rich Māori heritage, the city has something for everyone.

One of the top attractions is Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand’s national museum, offering interactive exhibits on the country’s history, culture, and natural environment. The Wellington Cable Car provides stunning views as it climbs to the Botanic Garden, where visitors can enjoy beautiful walking trails and the Space Place observatory.

For film enthusiasts, a trip to Wētā Workshop is a must, offering behind-the-scenes insights into world-famous films like The Lord of the Rings and Avatar. Meanwhile, Cuba Street’s vibrant atmosphere, street art, and independent shops make it the cultural hub of the city.

Nature lovers will appreciate Wellington’s stunning outdoors, from walking along the scenic waterfront promenade to hiking Mount Victoria Lookout for breathtaking panoramic views. The nearby Zealandia Eco-Sanctuary provides a rare opportunity to see native wildlife, including tuatara and kaka parrots, in a lush, predator-free environment.

Wellington’s coastline also offers spectacular experiences. Oriental Bay is a popular inner-city beach perfect for swimming or relaxing in the sun, while Scorching Bay provides golden sands and a laid-back café scene. For those wanting to venture further, a short ferry ride takes you to Matiu/Somes Island, a tranquil wildlife reserve in the middle of Wellington Harbour.
